2009 Kastles Campaign
Begins July 2
Only eight days remain until the Washington Kastles begin their second season of Advanta World TeamTennis as they travel to California to take on the Newport Beach Breakers.
Head coach Murphy Jensen and new Kastles star Leander Paes will make their Kastles debut against a Breakers team that finished fourth in the Western Conference at 5-9 in 2008.
The Kastles return home to D.C. on July 7 for opening night against Venus Williams and the Philadelphia Freedoms.
Serena and Venus Advance at Wimbledon
Washington Kastles star Serena Williams and sister Venus WIlliams kicked off their Wimbledon play this week as the championships began at the All England Tennis Club in London, England.
Serena, the No. 2 seed in the ladies singles draw, defeated Neuza Silva 6-1, 7-5, in the first round on Monday and Jarmila Groth 6-3, 6-2, in the second round on Wednesday.
She will take on Roberta Vinci in round three.
Serena will also pair up with Venus as the No. 4 seeded women's doubles team, taking on the team of Virginie Razzano and Aravane Rezai in round one.
Venus, who has won the last two Wimbledon titles, defeated Stefanie Voegele in the first round and defeated Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
She is set to take on Carla Suarez Navarro in the third round.
Venus will make her first professional appearance in Washington at the Kastles' home opener on July 7 with the Philadelphia Freedoms.
The Kastles' Leander Paes and partner Lukas Dlouhy, the recently crowned French Open champions, were upset this morning in the first round by James Blake and Mardy Fish.
