Northern Virginia Men Place Third
After Beets' Win at 4.0 National Championships
Forster Undefeated at Nationals
TUCSON, AZ -- It all came down to one match at nationals. With the score tied 2-2 to decide third place, Mid-Atlantic's No. 1 singles player Branden Beets' match would decide it all.
After battling back from a first-set tiebreak loss, Beets won a super tiebreaker, edging Northern California 3-2 at the Chrysler USTA Adult League National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center.
The No. 1 doubles team of John Staren and Adrian Flores and the No. 2 doubles team of Thomas Hsieh and Henry Forster also earned victories for NOVA.
Beets came from behind to defeat Khang Phan 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. Staren and Flores nipped Johnny Liu and Stanley Chang 6-2, 7-6. Hsieh and Forster overcame a first-set deficit to squeak past Andy Ye and Vu Hoang 4-6, 7-6, 1-0. Forster was undefeated at nationals.
The NOVA team fell to the eventual runner up (Irvine, CA) in the semifinals 4-1.
Other team members are Wayne Mansulla, Tom Smith, Adrian Flores, Joong Min, Rod Young, Jameson Lee, Danny Concepcion, Charles Tellis, Gregg Malawer, Duk Hyun Park, John Grim, Anthony Acosta, Eric Adams, Wren Meyers, Antonio Anderson, Steven Lagana, and Harold Harris.

The Florida women and Pacific Northwest men captured the 4.0 national titles at the Chrysler USTA Adult League National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona.
The Seattle men’s team, representing USTA Pacific Northwest, defeated a team from Irvine, Calif., 4-1 in the Championship match. In the morning semifinals, Seattle swept a team from Mountain View, Calif., 5-0 in the semifinals. On the other half of the draw, Irvine, Calif. defeated Northern Virginia 4-1.
The Seattle team is captained by Robert Chung and features Josh Berger, Rolf Bjorn Hyllseth, Marcus Rose, Tim Hunter, Brad Dilling, Pablo Ramirez, Steve Fong, Albert Lu, Matt Richter, Frank Sun and Corey Cheng.

The Fort Lauderdale women’s team, representing USTA Florida, defeated a team from Sacramento, 3-2, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, Fort Lauderdale defeated a Poughkeepsie, N.Y., team 4-1, while Sacramento topped Los Angeles, 5-0 in the semifinals.
The Florida team is captained by Andrea Derby and features Beverly Norona, Dolly Rump, Darcy Hayes, Karen Novick, Marly Garcia, Linda Mulklevicz, Elaine Brett, Linda Anderson, Gwen Tower, Adriana Aray, Barbara Clabby, Sharon Vonstrolley and Vivian Fernandez.
In the third-place playoff match, Los Angeles defeated Poughkeepsie, 4-1.

Each semifinalist advanced to the championship round by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 4.0 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.
The USTA League program celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2005. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 665,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
Chrysler is entering its third year as the presenting sponsor and official vehicle of USTA League. Head Penn Racquet Sports is in its 21st year as official ball of USTA League.
