Tech, Maryland, Georgetown & UMW Qualify for Nationals
ANNAPOLIS, MD -- USTA/Mid-Atlantic crowned Virginia Tech the 2009 Tennis On Campus Sectional Champions.

Virginia Tech demolished Maryland 30-15, winning all five sets to sweep the men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles at the Naval Academy’s Brigade Indoor Tennis Center.

In the semifinals and finals, Caroline Koch, Krissy Rud, Mike Vaughan, Russ Taylor, and Lauren Palmucci were undefeated.

Women’s Doubles: Caroline Koch/Krissy Rud (VT) def. Maraya Pratt/Anita Sahu 6-5.
Men’s Doubles: Mike Vaughan/Russ Taylor (VT) def. Alex Buzduga/Charlie Schuster 6-3.
Women’s Singles: Lauren Palmucci (VT) def. Monika Young. 6-1.
Men’s Singles: Rob Bareford (VT) def. Charlie Schuster 6-3.
Mixed Doubles: Lauren Palmucci/Russ Taylor (VT) def. Monika Young/Alex Buzduga 6-3.

The top three teams qualified for automatic bids and will receive $1,000 for travel to Arizona, while UMW qualified as an at-large team.
In the third-place match, Georgetown overcame all odds and snuck past the University of Virginia 26-25.
After trailing 22-16 going into mixed doubles, Ryan Goldstein and Mary Beasley overcame impossible odds to steal the victory from Virginia in a supertiebreaker 7-6.

The entire team match came down to one point at 6-all in the supertiebreaker and Georgetown won it on the strong lefty serve of Goldstein.
Goldstein said, “I went to his forehand, where I hadn’t gone all day. We were due. We lost three tiebreakers today.”
Georgetown saved three match points on Goldstein’s serve in overtime.

The Hoyas were down 15-40 but persevered and won three games in OT to force the supertiebreaker at 25-all.
In the tiebreaker, Goldstein ripped a forehand and service winner to go up 5-3.
Then his partner Mary Beasley belted a forehand winner past Virginia’s Chip Miller for the 6-3 advantage.
The Hoyas needed one more point for the victory but Virginia fought back.
The Cavaliers fought off three match points, including a Shannon Bayliss volley winner to tie the score at 6-all.

The next point would determine which team would go to nationals.
Goldstein smacked a first serve and the Hoyas were headed to Surprise, AZ.
It was the best match of the tournament with so much riding on one point.
Georgetown fought off four Virginia match points.
Beasley said, “We had nothing to lose.”
But they won a trip to nationals.

In the semifinals, Maryland nipped last year’s champion Georgetown 25-24, while Virginia Tech defeated Virginia 26-22.

Instead of playing varsity tennis, Koch wanted to play on Virginia Tech's Tennis On Campus club team.
"I love it," said the sophomore hospitality and management major. "It is competitive, yet I can still focus on my academics. I wanted to come to school for my education.
"I like WTT [World TeamTennis]. It is more of a team atmosphere because it is the total games. It is more fun to cheer on your team."

West Virginia senior Pete Deremer won the Sportsmanship Award and was presented with a Wilson K-Factor racquet.
In West Virginia’s first year as a Tennis On Campus club team, Deremer said he has had a lot of fun.
Before the tennis and baseball seasons were during the same time, so he didn’t play tennis.
But his sophomore year in college, he picked it up again.
His father, Greenbrier’s Terry Deremer, was happy that Pete started playing tennis .
Terry always taught tennis and now Pete would ask him to play.
James Madison and West Virginia earned Team Sportsmanship awards and were given Tennis Warehouse tennis bags and Wilson grips and strings.

In the Section Championship, 180 players and 18 teams participated: 1) Old Dominion University, 2) West Virginia University, 3) University of Virginia, 4) James Madison University, 5) George Washington University, 6) Loyola University, 7) University of Maryland, 8) Virginia Commonwealth University, 9) Johns Hopkins University, 10) William & Mary University, 11) University of Maryland (Baltimore Campus), 12) American University, 13) Georgetown University, 14) University of Mary Washington, 15) Virginia Tech, 16) US Naval Academy, 17) Towson University, and 18) University of Richmond.
