Vision Statement

USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section Organizational Vision Statement

Recommended by the Board of Directors, and Ratified by Membership Vote at the USTA/MAS Annual Meeting, November 15, 2003.

USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section and its four state-aligned Districts (collectively, "USTA/MAS") constitute the governing body of tennis within its assigned geographic boundaries, with the express mission to promote and develop the game in every respect. The Mid-Atlantic Section promotes and develops the game of tennis through decentralized operations that emphasize a community-level orientation. While the Sectional Association and the District Associations work together cooperatively and complimentarily to fulfill the Mission of the USTA, the Section, on the one hand, and the Districts, on the other, each have separate spheres of primary responsibility for operations. Beyond their respective spheres of primary responsibility, each has an affirmative secondary responsibility to support the other’s efforts to meet its responsibilities.

The Districts’ sphere of primary responsibility includes
  1. Fulfilling the obligations of the Districts under the bylaws of the Section,
  2. Encouraging and maintaining direct contact and involvement with communities, community organizations, tennis clubs/ associations and tennis volunteers,
  3. Innovating and implementing programs, development efforts and District-level competition within their geographic areas as consistent with USTA organizational documents, and
  4. Supporting hosts of USTA Special Events within their geographic areas.
The Section’s sphere of primary responsibility includes
  1. Fulfilling the obligations of the Section under national USTA organizational documents and regulations, as well as the Section’s own organizational documents,
  2. Overseeing the fundamental integrity of the Districts,
  3. Acting as the information conduit between the organizational elements of the Section and the national USTA, and acting as the representative of the Districts to the national USTA, where direct communication or representation by the Districts is unavailable,
  4. Implementing Section-level competition as consistent with USTA organizational documents, and
  5. Proposing and implementing Section-wide programs as well as improvements in coordination and efficiencies among the organizational elements within the Section.
The Districts and the Section have a shared sphere of responsibility that includes
  1. Educating volunteers, balancing the interest of subject matter with the interest of efficiency,
  2. Cooperating, whenever possible, with the other organizational elements within the Section, and
  3. Respecting the independent roles and responsibilities of the other organizational elements within the Section.
