On May 12, Mount Vernon Athletic Club (MTVAC) will be joining forces with West Springfield High School junior Molly Prins to offer a free tennis clinic to kids with parents in the military. Prins, an avid player and military child, has been working with MTVAC Tennis Director Tim Bainton since November to finalize the details of her school’s community service activity.
The plan is to break the children into four groups and run them through six 20 minute sessions introducing them to forehands, backhands, footwork, serves, and finishing with "rally time." The sixth session is a 20 minute snack break where a light snack will be provided. Bainton will provide some of his instructors to help and Prins has recruited a group of her USTA tennis friends, high school tennis friends, and other high school athletes to help with the clinic.
Prins is hopeful that the event will be well attended. Her goal is to have around 50 children participating in the event. She has begun recruiting at Ft. Belvoir, which is the closest base to Mount Vernon, in hopes to get as many kids out as possible. Prins credits tennis for “saving” her on more than one occasion in helping her adjust to her many moves. She is currently in her seventh new school. She hopes that introducing tennis to the military children at the clinic will allow tennis to do the same for them.
