USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) gets kids and courts together, encouraging the private sector and public sectors to lend a hand as all work toward that common goal.
Founded in 1969, the NJTL was the brainchild of former tennis champs Arthur Ashe and Charlie Pasarell, as well as businessman Sheridan Snyder. Its goal was simple: To encourage kids, specifically focusing-on urban kids-to try the game of tennis. That goal has worked for 220,000 children involved in NJTL.
As its scope broadened, the NJTL's successful formula reached many locations, and in 1985, it joined forces with the USTA in an effort to unify their common goal of introducing tennis to young people everywhere.
ARTHUR ASHE ESSAY CONTEST 2009: The National Junior Tennis & Learning will again sponsor the annual Arthur Ashe Essay Contest. The contest is open to all NJTL participants 18 and under. The essay should be 300 words or less on what Ashe's famous quote means to you. His quote is: "From what we get, we make a living. What we give; however, makes a life." Winners will attend the 2009 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at the US Open as a VIP. For more information, click here.
Today, USTA/Mid-Atlantic NJTL has 27 active chapters, providing multiple services and programs, each providing court time, equipment and encouragement. USTA/Mid-Atlantic NJTL centers on team play, while helping those kids involved develop tennis skills and fitness awareness. Moreover, participants develop a feeling of belonging and a sense of self-worth that helps them develop as players and as people.
